South Florida Fertilizing Tips

Nitrogen, phosphorus, and potash are considered to be the primary plant food and are required in the largest amounts. Iron, manganese, copper, boron, molybdenum, zinc, and other minor chemical elements are important as secondary plant food and are only needed in small amounts.

Florida soil varies greatly and the amount of each fertilizer should be determined by a soil test. A general fertilizer adequate for most trees is a 25% organic 8-8-8 with minor elements, shrubs 8:4:8 and sod 16:4:8. Please note that palm trees need to be treated with a special palm fertilizer, we recommend Lesco Fertilizer.

In South Florida the growing season is practically year-round and very good growth results have been obtained when one-third of the yearly total amount of fertilizer recommended is applied in March, June and October.

Special Note: Fertilizing your plants and trees not only helps them grow better, but also helps them resist the attack of insects, diseases, and other natural or man-made disasters.
