Much of Florida was once an ocean bottom, which
means many plants had to have originated somewhere else.
Native plants took root naturally long ago, brought
by the wind, sea, birds, animals; exotic plants have
been introduced, either intentionally or accidentally.

 |
| Although we've seen destruction of our
native habitats by exotic plants, it is possible for natives
and well-chosen exotics to co-exist. Do your homework
before introducing exotic plants to native plants to avoid
any complications. Also, you may want to consider the
extra maintenance that exotics require, such as watering
and fertilization. Your landscaping will benefit when
natives are allowed to be the significant part.
Many cities now specify a certain percentage of native
plants in new landscaping. For example, Sanibel Island,
Florida requires at least 75% of residential and commercial
landscaping be done with native plants. This restriction
is enforced to help maintain the Island's ecosystem,
as well as conserve fresh water.

Watering,
fertilizing, pruning,
and pest control
are essential to achieve the ultimate results in your
plant care for both native and exotic plants.
