Southern Tradition Landscape Contracting, Inc.
(STLC) recommends St. Augustine/Floratam sod for both
residential and commercial properties.
St. Augustine sod is the most common lawn and parkway grass in South Florida. It has stout, flat, creeping, branching runners, which cling tightly to the ground, and tough leaf blades to 6" long and 3/8" wide. It is fairly dense and produces a deep carpet or buildup; is fast growing and needs frequent mowing; otherwise there will be runners above the sod which can trip the walker. It is not particular as to soil, grows in full sun or semi-shade, is more salt-tolerant than other Florida lawn grasses, but cannot stand constant traffic and requires sufficient irrigation in the dry season.
Bahia sod is a less expensive grass that is also commonly used in South Florida. It is hardier and can withstand drought-like conditions better than St. Augustine/Floratam grasses. Its characteristics are different than St. Augustine/Floratam grasses in that it is not as thick, has thinner blades and does not have runners.
Sod, like any landscaping at your home or commercial site, needs to be cared for and maintained in order to look good. As with any landscaping, fertilization and regular trimming is highly recommended.
To protect your investment during the dry months in Florida, STLC highly recommends having a properly running irrigation system installed.
